Te Pāti Māori: policies for Election 2026
Te Pāti Māori holds six of the seven Māori electorates and asks voters for the candidate vote in the Māori electorates.
Campaigning on tax, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Māori representation.
Tax
- The “Kiwi Tax Plan”: the first $30,000 of income would be tax-free, and the party says 97% of people would pay less income tax.
- A targeted wealth tax on the wealthiest 3%, plus more revenue from corporations, offshore profit transfers, vacant property and land banking.
- An extra tax credit for about 3 million people earning $60,000 or less, worth up to eight weeks of food a year.
Te Tiriti o Waitangi
- A $220 million Mātike Mai Fund over four years to support Māori-led constitutional reform.
- An independent Te Tiriti Commission that can investigate serious Crown breaches and issue Te Tiriti Compliance Orders.
- Make Waitangi Tribunal recommendations binding on the Crown.
- Restore and resource a national action plan for the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, starting in the first 100 days in government.
- A 2040 target for constitutional transformation.
The tax figures are the party’s own estimates and the costings have not been independently checked.
