Te Atatu: Bob van Ruyssevelt

Name: Bob van Ruyssevelt

Candidate Profile:
Early on it took less than a year in the Princess Street branch to convince Bob that the Labour Party did not represent a sufficiently progressive force and it took the formation of the New Labour Party to get him involved in party political activity. He has represented his home electorate several times for the New Labour Party and the Alliance in the general elections and for a number of progressive tickets including the Anti-Pokie Alliance in Waitakere City.

Instead of carrying on with his degree course Bob completed a motor mechanic’s apprenticeship at John Andrew Ford. As well as a number of contracting roles Bob has had a number of management positions including for a transport hub in London, as manager of the Auckland Branch of plumbing and electrical wholesaler A&T Burt Ltd and manager of the Portaloo company. He is currently a swinglift operator with a West Auckland transport firm.

Candidate Statement:
Bob says, “We need to build the Alliance vote to get as many Alliance MP’s as possible into parliament. Under Labour wealth has continued to be transferred from the majority to an small group… just 10% of the population controls 50% of the wealth… and of course a National government would speed up this process. We need to get the greedy minority to pay a bigger share of taxes to increase spending on education, health and housing as well as paying more realistic
benefits to the most disadvantaged. Workers need to organise to get
a bigger share of the product of their labour. Not tax cuts for the rich but wage increases for the low paid!”
