He was born in 1972 in Dunedin and grew up locally in the nearby town of Warrington and in North Dunedin, and lived in Auckland, Wellington and London, before returning to Dunedin in 2003.
He is currently employed as the national communications officer for the Maritime Union of New Zealand.
He is director of a communications agency Parka Limited that has previously worked for clients in the science, fashion, sports, homeware, trade union, and other sectors. He is also a freelance journalist and writer.
He is a graduate of Otago University (BA, Political Studies) and Massey University (PG Dip Journalism).
He previously stood for the Alliance in Dunedin North in 2005 and has served as Party President and is currently national media spokesperson and communications officer for the Party, as well as trade spokesperson.
