Tax justice petition presentation at Parliament, Wellington, 16 August 2011
Representatives of many supporting groups and unions attended the presentation of the Tax Justice petition to take GST off food and introduce a financial transactions tax, at Parliament Buildings in Wellington today.
The petition was received by Labour MP Su’a William Sio, and attended by Green and Mana MPs.
The Tax Justice campaign is a joint initiative of the Alliance Party and Socialist Worker.
Alliance national spokesperson Victor Billot (right) and Auckland Central candidate Sarita Divis address Auckland maritime workers at their 11 August stopwork meeting. Auckland waterfront workers and seafarers voted donations towards the Alliance’s worker-friendly campaign for the 2008 election.
Similar support has been offered from Wellington Seafarers and Port Chalmers workers.
Alliance members joined the picket line of Alsco laundry workers in Dunedin in November in their quest for improved wages and conditions. The workers who are members of the Service and Food Workers Union have now settled with their employer.
